August 5, Dog #27 is BEEGEE!!!!

It was hard to pick just one photo of this charming face!  Holy buckets!

Beegee is an amazingly fluffy and open faced sprite! I had such a great time painting him!

Here's what Donna his owner/best friend says about him!

He’s named Beegee because he is the spitting image of Barry Gibb. He is a playful and snuggly guy and his goals in life are to acquire more human friends and dog treats. If he could work a phone he’d be on Instagram and TikTok with thousands of followers!

August 4, Dog #26 is Jaco the Poodle!

At the moment, we are at Camp Mishawaka in Grand Rapids, where we've been coming for a month for the past three summers, and we run with the poodles here! Marley is a 5 or 6 year old white poodle, and Rummy is a youngster, black and white, and Pompom loves to play "Race Race Chew on my Face" with her!

THIS lovely brown poodle is Jaco, who is with Mary, who says:

These puppers are Jaco(brown poodle) and Sophie (Brittany Spaniel) She is in charge and always has been but Jaco is trying playfully to chip away at the hierarchy.  Sophie is 5 years old and belongs to my neighbor and Jaco has been with us for a year now~

You'll have to see the photo after the painting!

August 3, Dog #25 is BEN!

As in BIG BEN! And very Zen Ben, and such a joy to paint!

And he has a pretty amazing story, as told by Ann~

Zen Ben

Retrieve A Golden of the Midwest coordinates very complicated rescue missions to get dogs out of China, into U.S. foster homes and then, onto their forever homes. We signed up to foster a dog named Ben, who was in an over crowded shelter in Shanga, China. A shelter run by Buddhist Monks. Ben had been there since he was nine months old, and like the thousands of other animals in shelters, had little hope for a family to call his own. Surprisingly, Ben arrived to our home completely unscathed by his days long journey in a crate (traveling with tens of other dogs in crates) via shuttles, planes, cars and vans. When he finally did arrive, this foster dog Ben had nothing but wags and hugs and smiles for us. We fell in love instantly with this big, handsome, wildly affectionate boy and within hours we knew that Ben was home. Much like the Buddhist Monks that protected him, he is a quiet, calm and loving friend to all.

August 2, Dog # 24 is Mr STUBBINS!!!

This is our delightful friends' rescue, and he's a sweet little guy! And here's what Zan says about him!

Our little Chihuahua-Yorkie, Mr. Stubbins, aka McStubbins, Stubbs, StubHub, came to us as a rescue from TX. He finds nothing more exciting than seeing us pick up his leash so he can go investigate the neighborhood and bark at any passerby. When he's not sniffing or barking, he can be found enjoying a sunbeam.

August 1, Dog #23 is MULLIGAN!!!!

Oh my lord!  Yes, can you tell this is another of the dogs that I just had to paint?  I mean, seriously, look at those ears, those eyes, that knowing little smile... I LOOOOOVE it!!!

And here's what Erin says of this unique creature~

The Italian greyhound, Mulligan, is our high class man, hence the judgement in his expression. If he was human he would be riding a moped through Naples collecting the women with his charm. He is an old man now and wears a diaper but still charms with the best of them.

July 31, Dog #22 is Remi!

This is such a noble looking dog. I couldn't resist painting this serious, attentive, open and aware face. Besides, I love painting black dogs and there hasn't been one since Stormy the black pug on July 14th!

Black short haired dogs have such great shine when they've got a healthy coat, and Remi is no exception to this fact. Look at that shine!

July 30, Dog #21 is Goldy!

I have to admit I had some difficulty getting quite the right color here for Goldy!  That wonderful mix of orangey-red with all the golden tones~ love it!

And here is Goldy's story!

Goldy, a golden retriever/Chow mix, was a stray that we were lucky enough to find and be able to keep. We think she was abandoned but can’t imagine why, since she’s the sweetest, most beautiful creature. She was well taken care of, though – spayed, house trained and socialized – so we got lucky on that front too. She provides our family with endless mellow fluffiness.

July 29, Dog #20 is Yukon~

Yukon was an amazing soul-  here is Rob, his friend's love letter to him~

Yukon

Thank you for being such an awesome dog, better than I could ever deserve.  You shared my joy for playing in snow and cold weather, and Beth’s love of cuddling on the couch or wherever else you managed to pin her against the cushions.  People said we spoiled you, but really it was you who was spoiling us.  How many people get to enjoy a canine companion who doesn’t need a leash simply because he’d rather hang out with his humans?  How many people can count on winning a bet that their dog is the cutest?

I basked in the reflected glory of your life whenever we were on campus or getting a puppuccino at the coffee drive-thru.  Students pronounced you as “chill,” their highest praise.  Everybody, even people who live with cats, thought you were awesome.  Friends and family accepted you and your “magic fibers of love and joy” into their homes, pining for more effective vacuum cleaners as we left.

Many people in town and on campus know me as “the guy with the dog.”  Remember last May, when we were walking on campus on Commencement Day?  Two graduates, to their parents’ amazement, called out your name even though they hadn’t seen you since before the pandemic.  I was just some anonymous professor, worthy of note only because of my connection to you, the most awesome dog.  A year ago, Beth, Walker, and I were at a restaurant in Saint Paul and our server asked if I taught at WSU and did I still have the awesome dog.  Last November we were at a Christmas event in Loring Park in Minneapolis, and a couple walked up and asked if I was Rob.  They remembered you from camping next to us at Boats and Bluegrass years ago.

Now I am dreading the inevitable onslaught of questions: “Where’s your dog?  How’s Yukon?”

I love you dearly and will miss you terribly.  You will always be my bestest puppydog.

July 28, Dog #19 Maggie for Shelley!

And this is Maggie! On the beach!  Where dogs get sand everywhere they can possibly hold it until they are in the car or back home and then they shake and send it away from them and into every possibly crack and crevice available!

I love the beach! Especially with dogs!

I had fun painting the sandy colored background for this one. Making up those wandering grey is such a joy!

July 26, Dog #17 is Ernie!

This is Ernie! Oh my- that face. And this is the one I selected from several others- you do NOT know how hard it is to resist painting everything that comes my way!  This one is so special- and Ernie's brother, Bert, is set for tomorrow, but I may get him done to post later today just because...

Here's their story from Jenina!

Meet Ernie and Bert, the dynamic duo that captured a mother's and daughter's hearts, bringing joy and healing to their lives. Thier tale (or tails) became one of love, healing, and the power of unexpected connections.
It all started when the daughter stumbled upon an online rescue site and came across Ernie and Bert, two bonded Yorkies needing a foster home. She couldn't help but feel a magical connection, believing that her beloved big brother, who now resided in heaven, had sent them as signs of his enduring love.
The signs were undeniable. First, their names - Ernie and Bert, just like the lovable characters from Sesame Street. Memories of her son's Sesame Street-themed childhood came rushing back, filled with laughter and playfulness.
Second, Yorkies had always held a special place in their hearts. From when the kids were little, these tiny pups had been part of their lives, providing companionship and unconditional love. They were no strangers to dressing them up in adorable baby outfits and taking them for walks in a stroller, much to the delight of their neighborhood.
But it was the third sign that sealed the deal. Ernie and Bert needed a foster home on a significant date - February 18, 2023- their beloved son's birthday. It felt like destiny had intervened, bringing these two furry friends into their lives at the perfect moment.
As the days turned into weeks, Ernie and Bert's presence filled their home with laughter, wagging tails, and endless cuddles. The bond between the family and the pups grew stronger with each passing day. It was clear that these Yorkies had found their forever home. They had gone from being foster dogs to cherished family members, forever reminding this mother and daughter of the incredible love they shared with their son and brother in heaven.

July 25, dog #16 is Sammi for Joan!

Sammi is an old dog and she lives on a farm with my sister's friend Joan, and I didn't get much more of a story than that yet, but I hope to have a bit more for you!  We've all been out traveling a bit, which makes the scheduling and regulation of this project a bit more of a challenge but I do so appreciate the opportunity! I've also adjusted Apollo and added more highlights to Louie's eyes and will be reposting those soon!

Happy Tuesday!  It's supposed to be the day of the week we get the most done- did you know that?

July 24, Dog #15 is LOUIE!

This is Louie, whose personality is as big as his ears! Louie recently experienced a scary health crisis, which is worrisome enough as a human who can talk and express what feels wrong, but when a dog isn't feeling good, that is just so hard!  He's much better now, and his older pack member Honey is still going strong.

Such great dogs!

July 23, Dog # 14 is Apollo!

What a noble face for such an elevated name! I think it totally suits him, don't you? There's something about a relaxed and smiling dog that slows my heart beat and calms me down. If the world is all right by him, it must be good enough for me!

Here's what Ellen writes about Apollo~

Apollo will be 15 years old in December.  I adopted him from the Animal Humane Society at age 2; he was said to be a Rez dog from up North.  Apollo has never had any interest in sticks, balls or toys, but is an amiable fellow who likes to meet other animals and people.   His heritage includes Beagle, Pomeranian and Treeing Walker Coonhound breeds.

July 22, Dog #13 is MONKEY!!!!

This is Monkey!  She is our Pompom's bestest friend and lives around the corner from us and when we come around the block that way Pompom just HAS to pop in and tear around with dear Monkey!  They are very similar in size and energy level, though Monkey is a bit more mature at two years old. Here's what Barbara says about this imp!

Monkey came to live in Standish neighborhood 6/1/22. She was transported from an overcrowded shelter in Alabama & lived with a foster Mom in Crystal for about 2 months prior to that.  She has adapted very well!  She is mostly Chihuahua/Dachshund but has a bit of Boston Terrier, Poodle, Scottish Terrier and Toy Fox Terrier (a little bit of Leo, reincarnated to watch over her!).  Monkey loves everyone; people, kids, dogs. She has designated herself to be Queen of the neighborhood.  If you don’t acknowledge her when you walk by, you will hear about it!  She turned 2 years old on 6/1/23. I am so blessed to have such a good girl.  She makes me laugh every day!

Here's what his Molly says about him~

Hugo
Likes: treats, food, walks, toys, getting up on the couch when he’s not supposed to,
eating sticks outside, scratches
Dislikes: muzzles (because he eats sticks outside), hair dryers, vacuums, hot weather, rainy weather

July 19, Dog #10 is Percy!

This morning it's been rainy and cool and just a bit thundery, reminding me of the times we've spent in England in the Calder Vallery with our puppet master friends making puppets and being in parades!  This is their newest friend, a lovely dog with a ruffle like an old time poet!  I've painted their other beloved companion, Panchan, who went along everywhere and was a regular at the studio and scene alike, and I am honored to paint this handsome fellow! This is what Andrew wrote about Percy~

Meet Percy! He’s a rescue from Romania, we had him now for 3 and a half months. He’s still very nervous around other dogs but very loving and getting more confident by the day. Hard to replace our dear Panchan whom we had for 14 and a half years! But Percy is lovely and really has become a part of the pack.

July 18, Dog #9 is Henry!

Henry is Jax's brother, can you tell?  A bit of a family resemblance perhaps? More fantastic wrinkles to paint, lucky me!

And here's what Cate says about this lovely boy~

Henry is 2 years old.  His favorite thing in the world is ball.  He’s particular about which ball out of sooo many he wants to play with.  He can catch anything! A true athlete. His smile will light up a room .
Both of these boys are the sweetest people loving friendly boys ever!  He loves snuggling with his dad, my son Travis!

July 17, Dog #8 Jax for Cate!

Wrinkles are fun! I remember learning once from a painter of landscapes how to paint crevices in the earth- and he said you paint on each side of it and leave the crack alone! It kinda works the same way with wrinkles and closed eyelids- you paint on either side and let the fold be the fold. How's that for some daily wisdom?

This is the lovely Jax! His brother Henry is tomorrow! Here's what Cate said about Jax~

"Jax is a year old. He’s humble and remembers everything. He will play with anything you introduce him to.  He always wants to play with his big brother Henry. His face is squishy and sweet. He tries to be as athletic as Henry but is a bit clumsy. All heart. He loves car rides with his dad , Travis my son."

July 16, Dog #7 Rocky for Pam and Family!

This is an amazing sweet face- gotta love those looks when their eyes are searching for yours! Though in our case, it's because Pompom has been taught that she has to look at us for permission to have a treat... so maybe it's not all as soulful as it feels...

Hmmm... some dogs maybe!

Here's what Pam wrote about Rocky!

Rocky was the product of a 10-year-old girl wanting a furry buddy. He’s been her cheerleader, the family jester, and a big, soft landing pad for all of us who’d been without a dog for six years. He’s added so much joy to our lives! His favorite thing in the world besides his people and food is snow. He’s happy to “help” you shovel all day~

"We adopted Wellie 3 months ago as a tiny brown pup and we're watching him get BIG. He's the happiest guy, who loves toys, apples, belly rubs and his family. His #1 fear is the garden rake. Wellie aspires to graduate from puppy class and someday be allowed to sleep in his sister's bed."

July 13, Dog #4 Fezzik!

This is the biggest, sweetest, floppiest dog we know! And here's what his owner, my friend Kat (yes, we are both Kats!) says about him!

What a rascal! He won our hearts before we even had him in our hands. We knew he was going to be a giant, so what would be a more fitting name to give him than "Fezzik"? The gentle giant from The Princess Bride (Kat's favorite movie of all time)! He is a Sheepadoodle (Old English Sheepdog and Standard Poodle). After we did his DNA - for funsies - we have found out he is 51% Old English Sheepdog and 45% Standard Poodle and 4% TOY poodle. There is nothing toy about him! What a guy! Everyone is his friend, he'll lean on you to let you know that.

June 29th, Murphy!

I'm still looking for a few good dogs for this summer's "30 Dogs in 30 Days" Painting Project! This happens to be the adorable Murphy, whom I painted as a commission this summer already. I've got a nice line-up already of happy dogs, but there is room for yours too!

I also wanted to mention that Pompom was spayed yesterday and we were all a bit worried about her... we're a little sensitive to this little soul that represents all the pet juju in our house at the moment... back in April we went to Duluth and Pompom ate a grape that made her throw up and vomit for a day and a half, and for that little body, that's a lot of fluids going away, so we were all quietly freaking out... so having her spayed made us a little edgy yesterday... In April in Duluth we went to an emergency vet and she was giving IV fluids and anti-nausea meds, and she was fine.  And today she is absolutely nearly back to normal, silly little thing! Aside from the cone she has to wear for another 5 or six days, she's acting her regular self. We are all so relieved!  I actually dreamt about other dogs last night, as if we had three or four instead of just Pompom. One was a smaller greyhoundish dog but with more terrier like hair, and she was so great in my dream... I wonder if we'll find her sometime soon!

XOXO

June 14, Darks and Lights

It's been six months since the fire, and I'm feeling anxious. When something is supposed to be temporary, an interuption, it feels unsettling when it continues for so long. And there's the knowledge that our house won't be Our House The Way It Was ever again....

I'm also finding myself really missing Bunny. When you love someone like that, when she's a part of your daily routine, there's a relly big hole. Part of me is also afraid of forgetting what it was like to love her. Ack.

Enough of that for now. I'll post something more later- we still haven't sprinkled their ashes or held a memorial service for all our pets.

This is a pallet knife painting from up at Bearskin.  I enjoyed playing with the knife like this- it's like the One-Stroke-Per-Color paintings sorta, because you don't have that much control so they end up being really loose. Which I like!

This one is also from the Bearskin Lodge Plein Air Painting Workshop with Dave Gilsvik we went to- it was SUCH a gorgeous sunset, and I was trying to get Dave and my mom to come out and see it, and they were being tremendously pokey!

June 1, Three Graces, Birch

So it is JUNE already!  I was listening to World Party on CD on my drive in this morning, feeling awake and rested, and entertained by my drive through downtown. I am so lucky to have choice in my drive to work every day. That's part of a creative brain, I think... pushing yourself to stay out of ruts.  Routine and habit are necessary for some parts of life, and create a sense of security in a sometimes chaotic world, but it is so good for your brain and your spirit to switch it up every so often!

That said, I spent a week up at the Bearskin Lodge a couple weeks ago, and that was a shift for sure- I didn't actually have a daily commute- it was more the switch-up of painting outside and painting what I'm looking at instead of working from photos. Also, I decided to play with Golden Open Acrylics instead of my usual Heavy Body Acrylics, and that was fun too, because it was more like painting with oil. They don't dry as fast. Still, they dry a heckuva lot faster than oil does!

These birches were SO much fun to paint!  I did a bunch of paintings of them. I'll post some more... maybe... if I can get my groove going!  I'll be painting dogs again in July as well, so go ahead and start sending me your dog photos!

May 4th, Comfort of Two

These are actually my sister Beaner's cats, Max and Maddy, but they also make me feel they can be my beloved cats of my Uptown Twenties, Toby and Cobb.  Toby was my first pet as an "Adult" when I graduated from college and moved to Minneapolis for my first time living really on my own. He was such a sweet little kitten- I recently found photos we rescued from the house fire and there's some of him as a kitten!  I'll post them tomorrow or later today!

Cobb is the white kitten that my friend Jill and I found in Uptown in an island of bushes on our way to see a Noam Chomsky film at the Walked one spring evening in 1990.  We heard her on our way past and couldn't get her in the dark, so the next morning we went back with a can of cat food, and Jill stood out on the outside of the bushes in case she bolted out (there were cars driving past this island) while I wormed my way through the thicket to where she was, and grabbed her by the scruff of her neck.  At first we thought she was siamese because of how dirty she was, but when the vet we took her to washed her in the stainless steel sink, she became pure white.

Toby took good care of her, annoying though she was as a kitten to him.  They were such a sweet pair.

April 27, Max the Cat

I just ran to the Edina Pet Hospital yesterday to hang a few more paintings. Shelia, the owner there, asked me a half a year ago if I was interested in putting some of my pet paintings on her walls, and since I'd rather have them seen that store them, I said sure! I hung a lot of pieces there but there were some Cat rooms in use that I wasn't able to enter. Shelia had contacted me recently to let me know they were repainting those rooms and that she'd love some more work if I had any more.  So while I was up in Grand Marais back in March, I started a couple cat paintings.

This is not one of them.

This is my sister Beaner's sturdy farm cat, Max. He's got a definite personality, this one! And he's also really sturdy. He was a cute little fluff pot when Beaner first picked him and his sister Maddy up from a farmer in a parking lot. I think they were both also covered in fleas...  but dang cute!

April 13, Pompom Is Proud

I painted this one up in Grand Marias at the Art Colony this March- it's a 40x30 canvas, so quite a bit larger than life size, and Duane took it of Pom after a walk or something, she had done something she was supposed to do and was proving how well she could sit... can you see it in her face? I need to take a photo of her next to the painting because that would be really funny~

April 5, Bubbins Sits

This is Bubbins, Georgia's sister. They are pretty different creatures! Bubbins is shy, skittish, needs to bark at you a lot before she's willing to come up and be petted. They make a fun team!

I've got a new session of Paint Love starting on April 15th, Saturday mornings from 9:30-noon, and you're welcome to join us if you like.  Sign up is here~

It's a good time of year to get those brushes out!

April 4, Georgia Stands

I painted a lot up in Grand Marais two weeks ago- it was a heckuva adventure, and I was so glad to have stalwart friends along, Kris and Michelle- some heavy emotions were under all that paint- dealing with grief and loss, in this world, feels like a full time job.

This is Georgia. She lives with Shelley and Julian and her sister Bubbins, and she has been a help in our grieving process, especially for Max, who loved this painting as soon as I brought it into the house and decided it is his. So it isn't for sale~ I really like it too, so I'm glad he's picked it out! Georgia and Bubbins made a brief appearance at Max's birthday party last Thursday, and Max was thrilled and delighted. They are a pretty sweet pair of pugs, with Georgia being the more outgoing friendly one and Bubbins taking a bit more work to get to touch~
