July 13, Bramble!

This is Bramble, Charlotte's parent's corgi! She sent a few pics and I was debating between two and my son said THIS ONE! Which I agree with! That is such a wide open, beautiful corgi-smile!

I also hope you are staying cool today, if you are in Minnesota where we are expected to feel like 100 degrees everywhere... I didn't get a Lake Hiawatha video this morning because we had to drive Max out to Roseville for his AIC camp... it felt cool out there at 7:30am... I just hope all the kids manage to stay cool all day!  It's gonna be a toasty week~

This one is a 6x6 and is available!

July 12, Harley!

This is Harley!  I made another little video as I did some of the finishing touches... I'll post that separately on instgram~

And his owners came yesterday to the sweltering St Kate's Art Fair and brought me freshly made chocolate chip cookies with the chips all melty! That's the best part of this job, if you can call it that!

Judy wanted me to make sure I got Harley's streaks- I hope I managed!
Here's what Judy wrote about Harley~

"I went looking to adopt a dog after my dog Frank died unexpectedly.  Harley was being fostered outside Bel Plaine. He was with 4 other dogs at the time.I just loved the name of the rescue group---Redemption Road. He was just 10 months old but he acted much older. He's a hound mixed with shepherd mixed with maybe husky. He loves sniffing, meeting people and finally, other dogs."

July 11, Clover~

And this is Clover~

Sorry for the delay~ I was at St Kate's Art Fair all day and am at home in the air conditioning recuperating... it was pretty darn hot!  Thank you everyone who came out to explore art and hang in the shade under those beautiful trees!

I'm not sure this one is done yet, but I am just wiped out from the day so I'll adjust later~

Here's what Tanya wrote about Clover~

"Clover is a 1.5 year mini American shepherd, blue merle in color with those piercing blue eyes. She's a petite girl, around 17lbs, and has already learned lots from her older "sister" Skye like catching a frisbee and riding in a car. They play and tumble with each other, and Clover jumps over and under Skye before Skye knows what's happening. Clover has developed the nickname "pillow princess" as she will perch on top of a mound of couch pillows, and she loves to snuggle when it's time for bed, basically saying, "can we go to sleep now please?!" "

July 10, Frank!

And here is yet another face that just could NOT not be painted! As in I just had to! And also, it was sent to me by a high school friend on whom I had a huge crush back in the day~ so of course!

This is what Paul wrote about Frank!

"Here’s a little bit about Frank - he’s an Australian Shepard but for Dog purists, he is officially an American Shepard.  He will be 12 this fall.  He’s been the family dog for most of this kids life.  He is docile yet the greatest defender of a threat to anyone in the family.  And he is a great looking dog.  Everyone in the neighborhood knows Frank."

July 9, Gracie~

Isn't this the best face? My friend Rachel lives in Wisconsin way out there somewhere and has these wonderful little rescue Frenchies and axolotls and a compulsion to photograph insects and to run! She's the best!

And Rachel says of Gracie "she's a special rescue gal with a gummy bear body type and an insatiable need for food and affection!"

July 8, Goethe

Oh my word, what an elegant creature this is...

I've painted several dogs for Nick and his partner, and this is the second Giant Schnauzer- last year I painted Ingo who in his sprawling position as a delight to extend widely to the edges of the canvas. Goethe is a bit more reserved, and in a square format feels a little more contained. Here's what Nick said about Goethe~

"For a long time we have wanted to ask you to make a painting of the first of our Giant Schnauzers - Goethe - he sadly left us in the early 2000's. He was a formidable chap, very serious but loving and loyal. If you would like to add him to your 30-in-30 list we would love to buy the painting so we can include him with the paintings of Werner and Ingo that we love so much.

The futon was his favorite place -  I used the word serious to describe him, perhaps a more accurate word is sincere."

I love using the word "sincere" to describe a dog such as Goethe...

And this stunner is Huck!  here's what Mary wrote about him~ great story~

Huck was a wild dog who had been to 4 homes before mine and had been kept in kennels for long periods of time because no one could handle him. I was asked by my daughter who worked with the rescue if I could give him some attention and training since I was retired and had time on my hands. I said I would foster… he never left.

Once he arrived he got to work destroying everything I owned and my mantra became, “Huck has come into my life to show me what I don’t need anymore.” As a giant schnauzer/border collie mix, he was big enough to peruse the top of a book shelf and choose the most irreplaceable thing  it held. He would grab tubes of paint from my easel and run around the house squeezing paint out onto rare antique rugs and new furniture alike, resulting in a rainbow of colors in his white beard that I would carefully clean to avoid poisoning him. He went through 2 rounds of dog boot camp and even the trainers were perplexed about how to address his behavior.

I should mention that he was also incredibly sweet and funny and I was willing to work with him as long as it took for him to become a (semi) well behaved boy. Just as I was at my wits end in that pursuit, a trip to a friend’s cabin helped me stumble upon the answer, SWIMMING! He could swim for hours a day and found pure joy in the water. He swam back and forth in long laps across the lake. He swam next to boats and canoes, It had a calming effect  on him and he became a different dog. With this discovery, his

behavior, even between lake visits, miraculously changed.

Huck became my constant companion and protector. He accompanied me on numerous cross country road trips for the 8 years he lived. He entertained my 102 year old father immensely and was a treasured visitor to all at his assisted living.

Sadly,Huck was struck suddenly with an aggressive form of lymphatic cancer in the autumn or 2024 just after my father’s passing. By the time we discovered it he was suffering and struggling to breathe and we had to say goodbye far too soon.

He remains in our hearts and is the subject of many true stories that all sound like tall tales  and despite his initial years of challenging antics, I fell in love and he became a cherished family member and a really good boy.

July 6, Heidi for Judy!

It is still lovely and green in Minnesota- I hope you are finding cool spots wherever you are! It does get humid here, and you move slower and seek water, both to be in and to drink. I leave water out for the butterflies and birds and critters... and neighborhood dogs as they walk around. My pups always appreciate a bowl of clear fresh water as we walk the hood!

And this beauty is Heidi, who is Judy's Soul Dog, and who has a Magic Eye, as you can see! Perhaps Judy will tell us more about this amazing creature and I'll include it in the book!

I am always accepting commissions, so if you were hoping to be a part of this project, you can still send me your photos! If you know you want to buy it, I'll fit you in!

July 1, Lucy's Dog! and the OFFICIAL LIST!

Okay, this is the first dog of the 30 Dogs in 30 Days and I don't know his or her name!  Lucy had shown me the photo and sent it to me, asking me to paint it, and I believe it is a relative's pup, and so possibly her nephew/niece pup... and since Lucy owns Diamond's Coffee Shoppe where I've been curating shows and hanging my 30 in 30 Projects for over 15 years (holy cow!) AND since Lucy is CLOSING DIAMONDS this weekend, I needed to make the first dog hers. I wouldn't have gotten as far as I have without having her as a consistent and gentle space in which I could experiement and play with my work.

Here's to Lucy!  And GIT OVER TO DIAMONDS! I'm going today!

Oy, AND the OFFICIAL LIST of the 30 in 30 for this July! With the understanding that I am human and it will be switching around as the month goes...

June 29th, Snoop!

This is a commission, a 12x12 on board of a fluffy pup, whose fur somewhat overtakes his sweet face, and his owner was concerned that he looked unhappy in the first rendition so I went back in to see if I could make him happier, and I hope I managed!

I am actively compiling my list at the moment and will be posting it tomorrow!!  I DO still have some spaces open for my 30 Dogs, and if you want your painted for SURE, I'm happy to fit you in!

You can follow along on my blog posts at my instagram account, I think... here's that link!

June 24, His Daughter's Horses

Whew!  Here's another commission I've been working on for a while- I love horses! They are anatomically quite different from cats and dogs, though... a little closer to the deer I love and haven't painted in a while either!  These are for my sweet friend Andy, for his daughter who loves her horses dearly.

I wasn't sure about the background, painting it in blues first, but I'm really happy with the somewhat abstracted trees back there!

Up NOrth Painting~

Yep! I'm up north a bit, painting and working with kids! Got some pups around here to paint so that helps too, and there's always the beauty of the lake to pull me in. This painting is from a cloudy sunset- and all that color is true! The sunsets are amazing up here!

It is pretty chilly up here too, which I absolutely love, except for those few minutes between taking clothes off and getting into the bed, and that other time of getting OUT of the bed and into clothes in the morning!

And just as a little reminder, SEND ME YOUR DOGS!  I'm still looking for a number of dog photos for my July 30 Dogs in 30 Days project!

May 2, Art4Shelter!

Friday night was the annal Art 4 Shelter fundraiser for Simpson Housing Services, and I was live painting there along with my fellow artists Barrett and Jennie who were also the artists who were with me in 2018!  It was super fun, I was able to get two paintings done and both were bid on and claimed!

The first painting was from a photo I found on insta-  I need to write to the person and let them know I painted it! The dog is just so sweet and silly and I loved all the fluff!

And the second is an otter~

And there were SOOOO many people!  I really hope we did well!  Steve is retiring, the guy who has led so much of the work to get the new shelter built over by MIA, and it is beautiful. It's just so hard in the world right now to know what to do next, what can help, and things like this make me feel like I am actually doing something to help, even in just a small way.

Yes, another spanish goat.... my brother just got the greatest photos of these!  He and my sister in law are great hikers and on this day they went on a 14 mile hike through the Spanish hills where they were staying and saw all these goats... I loved this one's step and that lifted foreleg!

April 27, Spanish Wall Walker

Man, i meant to be posting WAY more than I have been!  Sheesh-

This is a goat from a photo my brother sent to me while wandering in Spain back in March- I was fascinated by the shapes of her (or him... don't know why but she strikes me as more feminine... how do you sex a goat anyway?) and the spaces around her, and by those crazy clingy sticky hoovies!  Look at how she's standing sideways!  Oh and the eyes too!  SO cool!

I'll either have her with me at the Sculpture Park Art Fair at the Walker May 9 and 10 or I'll be hanging her at Diamond's for May-june!

I'm getting the 30 Cats over to Diamonds this afternoon to hang them for the month, so if you're in town, feel free to come on by!

This goat is from a photo my brother Tom sent a week or so ago when he and his wife were rambling around Spain. They are true adventurers... finding out of the way places and hiking for 14 miles up and down stony areas, taking amazing photos so I don't have to. And that's where these goats were!

I loved this one, those toey-hoofies clinging so well to the rock~

April 5, Sea Otter Life

Here's an Easter Otter for you! This is a lovely large one I painted in Grand Marais at the end of March, during my residency with Michelle Miles at the Art Colony. I am still obsessed both with otters and with water reflections and how to paint something nebulous and ever changing...

The nose and head of this otter look a lot like a capybara to me, something with the shape of her nose. I also love that paw just lifting from the water, and the creamy colors of the rocks behind her, and something about that calm look in her eye...

Oh and the whiskers!

Gotta love those whiskers~

March 30, Sargent Hunter Hartmann

I just got back from my week up at the Art Colony- I'll start posting those paintings this week, actually...

And Michelle was with me up there- she has been a part of this amazing cohort of women artists who annually work at the Art Colony together. We were begun as a group gathered through artist and poet and one of the original WARM artists, Elizabeth Erickson. She guided us as a part of the Women's Art Institute and gently nudged and poked and prodded us into developing skills and seeking further knowledge about our chosen media, as well as exploring other subjects and tools. She was an incredibly generous soul, very quietly but strongly spiritual in her own living.
So we continue as best we can.

And this is Michelle's sister's cat, who carries a very strong name for such a strong face.

Max is a junior at Roosevelt High School, which is also 3 blocks away and contains a multitude of simply amazing, generous, thoughtful, considerate and kind humans including the legendary Principal Ledesma, who somehow manages to do his job and be everywhere at once!  He is at games, plays, choir recitals, picnics, breakfasts, and he's great at posting about how incredible his students and staff are. This painting is from a photo Principal Ledesma posted of the two pigeons who are living on the roof of the school, and he's named them after the assistant principals, Lucas and Gonzales.  And since I seem to be on a cat mode, I thought a bird or two could be fun!

March 27, Smokey~

Here is Smokey, from Christine for Anja's birthday, with a story about Smokey written by Anja~

"Smokey, a 21-year-old Chartreux with a dense blue-grey coat, golden eyes, and a calm that never left her. An angel who followed one like a loyal shadow through the highs and lows of life together, always appearing at one's side, steady and present, a gentle constant through every season.

That gentleness had a story behind it. The Chartreux is one of France's oldest natural breeds, tracing back to at least the 13th century. For generations, Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble shaped these cats into what Smokey was — resilient, patient, intelligent, and almost meditative in spirit. Smokey embodied all of it. And like those original monastery cats, no mouse ever escaped her. That same stillness could shift, in an instant, to lightning-fast precision.

At 21, she was the equivalent of a centenarian — and not a single year showed in her spirit. No drama. No fuss. Just unconditional dedication, morning after morning, night after night.

She proved what centuries of history already knew. Graceful, devoted, and deeply loving — right to the very last day."

March 26, Izzy for Jesse!

And this is Izzy, who was Jesse's cat when my friend Lissa met him, and so this story is in her words- and they are the lovely people who found and raised our Pipin for us!  Excellent cat fosters!

"Izzy was Jesse’s cat before I met him. When I came into the picture, he would wake me up at 5:30 every morning as per the pet psychic he thought that was the only time we had together. Lol! She told him that wasn’t correct and after that he really blossomed.

He was my outdoor gardening buddy hanging out under large rhubarb leaves. You could flip him on his back and clip his claws. Very malleable kind of cat.

He was really the easiest and the best! Such a snuggler!!

He was the best at taking any sort of affection that was given to him. My son would drag him around upside down and would purr the whole time. He loved having his tail pulled and would ask for it.

He was also the best mouser ever!"

I did have a scheduled creature for today but I haven't gotten the photos yet so I'm jumping ahead to this one, which is actually a photo I took of my sister's giant cat Max, who is a huge personality, and i loved his whiskers in this!  It is a large painting, 24x24 so the mustachios have an even bigger impact in person...

March 22, Beatrice

 And this is Beatrice~

I love those older grama names... as a teacher for 30 plus years, I've had students with nearly every possible name and it is always fun when I hear a name and think "Wow! I haven't taught anyone named that yet!"- recently Stuart is a name I haven't taught, as well as Fred, Edmund, Erma, and now Beatrice...

This face is a good one~

Here is Beatice's story, by Beth~

"Beatrice or the Queen Bea. You know how dads will say they aren't "cat people." They will scoff, protest, and even point to their allergies. And then a cat comes along that changes everything. Dad loves that cat in spite of everything, and that cat becomes his world. Beatrice is not "that cat." But when "that cat" passed away and broke his heart, he swore he'd never get another. We didn't believe him, and when we found multiple cats at the shelter that all had the same photo, we thought that one of those might be a good option. We told the shelter give us the one that would be the hardest to place. Beatrice came home. She was a rescued barn cat with her second litter of kittens. She was skinny and tired. We brought her home to rest. Days and weeks of patience brought her out of her shell, and she became a queen. Now she is sassy, rules the roost (and our dogs), and has Dad wrapped around her paw. "That cat" wore Dad down and taught him to love cats. Beatrice got "that Dad" with no assembly required. "

I have lots of ideas but nothing has quite struck home yet... dogs? more cats, of course yes I will be painting cats, and maybe turkeys... otters too because i can't quite not paint them, but often something surprising comes up and I'll end up painting something new~

March 20, Sirius Black

I seem to have a lot of black cats this year-  it's funny how that works. It seems every year there's some kind of a common theme. One year I had a lot of Siamese cats, another year a lot of orange tabbies... I love that. I've always loved black cats- Jeebo was my fluffy black lovey that I got at the pound in the early 00s, because she walked up one arm, across my shoulders, and down the other arm and how can you NOT get the cat when they do that?! We had her til Maxie was about 3 or 4... she was lovely.

And THIS is Sirius Black, my friend Cheryl's kitten that happened to her when she rescued a cat that she didn't realize was a MOMMA cat... at least, I think that was how the story went-

This was a fun one to paint!

These two took me all morning to paint- good thing it's my spring break and I had all morning! And then I went to post them and realized I'd forgotten their whiskers...  so here they are! I love this one a lot!

And the story is by Beth, Summer's mom-

James and Elouise are Summer’s sweethearts. She adopted them as a bonded pair, and they are definitely a dynamic duo.

Both are our miracle kitties as each tried to outdo the other in the “sickness and in health” part. Two cats- four different foods, three medicines, and probably 7 of their 9 lives!

James is all personality! He has opinions on nearly all topics and is not afraid to share them. He's very talkative, always hungry, completely neurotic, and devoted to his sweet Elouise and his Summer girl. His favorite spots are the top corner of the bed, the back of the couch, or curled up with his girls.

Elouise is the shy one but don't let that fool you. She will steal the food from your FORK if you look away. She's a contortionist who hasn't met a bedroom door that can keep her out. Her gentle strength has gotten her through tough times, and now she's living the life of a princess.

March 18, Cole in the Sink

Cats like to be in spaces that encourage peeking, hiding, feeling hidden so as to be able to pounce, maybe that make them feel more secure in their self image like my fav pairs of jeans...  and hence, Cole, in the sink...

Cole is a very black cat, also pictured in March 12's post where his golden eyes gleam from behind Henry- and I loved painting him in this white sink!

March 17, Oscar for St Patrick's Day!

I love this one- what a beauty! Those eyes, that slightly tipped head, just so lovely. That's what a cat is for~

And this one was just a delight to paint, i gotta tell ya- look at all that fluff!  SO great!

Here's Oscar's story from Signe~

"He is a pure bred Ragdoll that I adopted from a breeder,  so no adventurous rescuing him from a terrible fate. But I did reserve him for my 40th birthday after the passing of my long time feline companion, Trygve. "

March 16, Harold In The Bag!

And here is Greyson's brother Harold, also ensconced in a safe and secure paper bag. Really, who doesn't love a cat in a bag?

And I also love a cat that thinks it is a dog- our beloved Jeebo was very much that cat, and our current love Pippin, while not confused that she is a dog, hangs out with them without fear and pushes them around like siblings.

Here is what Kim says about Harold!

Harold we found as a three week old abandoned kitten and he is my kitty love. He thinks he is a dog since he was raised by dogs and howls for dog food at feeding time.
Both of them are hams.
