July 1, Hubert!

Happy JULY!!!  Here is Dog #1 for the month!  I was so excited to get started this morning, I think I may have skipped a bit of Hubert's body!  I might go back into this one after soccer camp this morning...
At any rate, THIS is Hubert!  Isn't he adorable?!?
Here is what his owner says about him!
Hubert is a 1 year old Border Terrier. His favorite activities include… hurdling his brother during games of chase (of course) and swimming.  We love Hubert’s dark eyes and of course THAT FACE!

June 29th, Thunder!

I painted this one today, outside at Powderhorn Park watching Max at soccer camp... he's so fun to watch!  He really is the class clown, unfortunately, but at least he seems to know how to make friends~  and this little dog is one of them.  This is Thunder, the little dog belonging to one of the blacksmiths at the North House Folk School, whom Max fell in love with two years ago and who was still here this year, and who is incredibly tolerant of seven year old dog lovers.

And here is the photo of my Max and another Max at soccer camp today-  they'd dressed in opposite colors and decided that tomorrow would be red day- and a shot of Max and Thunder!

June 26, "Northern Irises" and MY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Yay me! It is my birthday today!  And I am starting it off by going out to a Spina Bifida Conference this morning to teach (what started out as 20 kids and is now 37 at last count) one of my Negative Space Tree Painting Lessons because the title of the conference is " Beyond All Limits" and the idea is that the kids try doing something they don't think they can do, so we'll all paint trees together!
Wahoo!  Wish me luck!

And these are some gorgeous irises from last week, again kind of a lesson in negative space, and I really enjoyed painting them!  I don't do flowers often-  those would be some of my more rare paintings I would say.

And ALSO as my birthday present to YOU  I will give you 30% off of ANY PAINTINGS on my DAILY PAINT WORKS SITE today only!  Take a look through and let me know which ones you want and go ahead and CLICK to PURCHASE them and I'll send you a new invoice through Paypal for the discounted price-  good TODAY ONLY!

Including THIS ONE!

June 25th, An Apple For Your Thoughts...

Because perhaps apples can help you think better!  We like apples at our house.  We kinda decided it would be better to have a bowl of apples for the kids to nab from than the bowl of leftover Halloween candy... and so now we always have apples around.  The dogs don't like to eat them though, which is probably a good thing...

I had fun with the light on this dark red apple-  a Fuji maybe?  I can't remember!

June 19, The Irish Road- Happy Father's Day

For Father's Day, Duane gets to drive us home from Grand Marais through Sunday afternoon traffic-  I'll give you the gory details later... I do hope it isn't as bad as I am expecting it to be~
And this is a painting I did this week as a landscape demo for my lovely and talented class (thanks Caryl!) from a photo taken in Ireland, 2013, with my dad.  I still can't quite believe he's gone-  he had SUCH a great time in Ireland, talking to absolutely everyone who would stand still~

Hope you are enjoying your Sunday wherever you happen to be!

June 18, "Long Nose Wisdom"

This is a lovely collie that I've had the fortune to paint in the past for another 30 Dogs in 30 Days project, and I've been coming to the conclusion that it is really difficult to paint ANYTHING head on-  human, dog, car, moose-  I think it's because of the symmetrical orientation between the eyes, and how you (maybe subconsiously) want everything to match on both sides...

I think this worked...  it's 11x14 for my Artistry show in August in Bloomington!  Wanna come?  The opening is August 4th!  More info later- and DO send me your dog photos please!

June 16, "Lucy On The Water"

Dang!  It's been foggy and rainy the last few days, and by the time I've gotten back to the cabin at night to try and post, I couldn't get an internet connection!  SO here I am, and here's a pup!  This is Lucy, from Thunder Bay, Canada, who was sitting with her lovely owners just down from the Marine Station on the bay a couple evenings ago-  they'd been looking for a nice place to sit on the water and have a beer and everywhere was crowded so they opted to sit in the open and sit from a paper bag, which is never a bad way to go about it if you figure you can probably get away with it, and you are over thirty and not wanting to cause trouble...

June 13, Table Edge Mug

This is a little 6x6 demo mug, I think it may even have been a one-stroke-per-color one for my weekend class up here in Grand Marais...  I enjoy the small challenge of painting something deceptively simple, like a shiny blue mug.  Just having to really focus on something so ordinary can make you step out of yourself a bit, especially when you've just had a lovely orgy of painting lush, thick, velvety pug fur, or something similar....
Still accepting dogs for the 30 Dogs in 30 Days Project!  Send me your photos, people!

June 12, "Me, Worried?"

You know this look too- especially coming from a pug whose face is built to look perpetually concerned... and especially with those eyeballs pointing in odd directions- dang this was fun to paint!  I just finished teaching my Beginning Acrylic class at the Art Colony, and tomorrow morning we start the week long Advanced Acrylic class!  I still have room if you want to come up!
And I am looking for those dog photos for my 30 Dogs in 30 Days Project!  The time is now to send them in!  I'll be picking my favorites (and any you've wanted to commission) by the end of June and I'll post the list here and then paint one a day for the entire month!  And this being summer in Minneapolis, I do want to plan on a few Public Painting Events again!  I wasn't able to do them last year, but I think we can swing some this year!  Send your photos to me at katjojo@hotmail.com!

June 8, "And So It Goes..."

It's hard coming up with titles... and I have no one cleverer than me with words in my family (yet... perhaps my son will surprise me...) so I have to come up with them on my own.  I am SO pleased with this one!  This is our Gus, a jack-russell mutt terrier, who has the BEST looks I've ever seen!  He just has this way of sitting and looking at you out of the corner of his eye sometimes, that kind of a "yes, I know you want me to come over there because you are calling me, but I'd prefer to stay over here, thank you very much" and such kinds of thoughts.  You know what I mean, if you know a dog well. And this is SOOOOO one of those looks!  Totally-  and hence, the title~

June 5th, "Ear Wings And Shadow"

Another version of that sweet little dachshund named Fletcher I took photos of in May in Grand Marais!  It was just the perfect set up, with the pale concrete and that distinctive shadow and profile and those ears~  and creating that warm color for his coat, with the cool shadows-  do you know how much fun that is?  Have I mentioned how much I love to paint?  I can't stand it!  I have to post this and get painting!  Enough of the chit-chat!
Shoot.  I am not sure how big this one is, so I don't know how much to charge for it!  I think it's about 7 inches by 3.5 inches, which by my calculations means this one is for sale for...

$50!  Click HERE if you'd like this one!

And I may be wrong and it may be bigger, but I'll still let you have it for $50!

June 4, Sprawled At Your Feet

It's a bit late, and I've been a bit busy, and I've been wanting to post this for a while and I keep starting to set it up and then I think it's gonna take too long and so I don't but THIS time, seriously, THIS time I'm DOING it...
Yup.
See?
This is one more of my favorite paintings!  it's Gus!  Can you tell?  And I really like it, but I'm not sure about his eyes... what do you think?
Hmmmm~

And a couple process shots for you!  See the little photo taped up on the edge of the canvas?

June 2, "Yeah, You Always Say That"

And this is one of my favorite ones from up in Grand Marais this May-  and one I had painted awhile ago for my first "30 Dogs in 30 Days" Projects!  I've always loved her grin~  don't you?
I also needed to put up something I feel great about today-  it's been a bit of an odd day, maybe an odd week, with thoughts of dad for some reason popping in constantly and throwing me off balance-  one of those weeks where things don't go quite the way you were expecting them to go, and you know you have to sit back and be grateful instead of trying to force things... but it is really really hard!
Anyway, this is a favorite one!

June 1, Summer Lawn Dance

Ha!  We're watching my sister's dog while she's in Geneva working for a while- Salama is from Miami and is a mini-version of our terrier mutt, Teddy, and the two of them get along like milk and cookies and peas and carrots!  Here's Sal, watching Duane use the weed wacker in the backyard... the electric lawn mower hasn't been holding its charge and he wanted to tackle the grass- what we still have of it.... and Salaama couldn't resist the wacker's whine and hum and kept yapping at it!  We kept her away from the string...
And hey!  I need a few more students in my painting classes up at the Art Colony in Grand Marais! If you are on the fence about it, send me an e-mail or give me a call and I'll answer all questions that I can!  It will be a great time, I can guarantee it!

May 29, "St Cloud Irises"

So we went up to see Max's cousins yesterday, and it was a lovely damp time, full of coloring and motorized turtles swimming around in the backyard pool, and Debbie had these gorgeous Irises growing on the side of her house. I have a poster of Van Gogh's irises in my art room, and I love them, and this was so fun to paint, because I was thinking of Vincent most of the time I was painting it.....

May 26, "The Listening Face" in progress~

I wanted to post something today, so here is this one that I'm working on right now-  I can't get enough of my Gus... he's just got so many expressions in that face of his.  I will be taking more photos this weekend, and see if I can get the cataracts to show~  it is amazing, how diabetes and going blind haven't fazed him much.  He's still spunky and eager and sure he knows how much space Duane and I left between us for him to land in when he makes that leap in blind faith...

And I love that face!

May 25, A Mug...

Sorry!  I'm a bit tired tonight... we're dealing with the end of the school year from both sides- the teacher side and the student side, and it is amazing how many details there are!  And last minute changes!  And allergies and coughs and colds.... ack!

So here is a mug, we can all use a cup of tea, right?

May 24, Open Smile

Who is this, you might ask? Perhaps the face looks a little familiar, you've seen it before on my blog maybe... because this is the mug of our favorite family mutt, Gus~  ain't he something?! I couldn't resist painting this one-  he's my son's favorite dog, I think mostly because he's been around the longest, and because Gus tolerates Max's hugs and affections and tugging of limbs and ears.  The patience of a dog is incredible-  and believe me, Max has been scolded loudly for his mishandling of this sweet, patient little guy.  And I'm gonna make him be an Auction too... how's that?  I meant to post this on Sunday night-  better late than never...

May 23, Max the Corgi from "30 Dogs 2014"

Hi all!  Shameless self-promotion here!  Dickblick is hosting a Pet Portrait contest and I entered this piece (back on May 11th!) and the voting didn't start until today!  I'm just curious about how far this can go-  there are a LOT of entries, and here is a link to vote for mine, and I also encourage you to take a look through and vote for others if you want!  You can vote once a day until May 30th, and the prizes are art supplies, but it is the notoriety I am in it for!  Wahoo!  So again, here's the link to my page for the contest, and I am honestly pleasantly overwhelmed at all the art work that has been submitted from all over  the place!  Entries don't include much info except first name and name of the city, but it is fun!
I'll be back to my regular schedule tomorrow!  Ha!
And DO think about taking a class with me this summer, either at Grand Marais in June (11-12 for Beginning Acrylic) or June 13-17 (Advanced Acrylic)  or at Wet Paint for a one day class!  More info on Wet Paint is here!  And do please send me questions if you have any~  happy to answer as best I can!  I also am available for private lessons if you'd like that~

May 21, Diamond Dog

This is another glorious photo of an incredible face I just couldn't not paint!  Double negative, right?  Meaning I couldn't stand to not paint this dog so I DID!  And I don't know anything about this critter, whether male or female or much more than I took this at Diamond's Coffee Shoppe over a year ago and the dog's owner was kind enough to let me take it.  That's it!  But really, look at that FACE!  Wow~

May 20th, Squirrel?

And once again, I've been too busy to post for a couple of days.  I really hate it when that happens... I am off schedule again-  It is easier when I get up a little early and get this done right away in the morning, because then I have the rest of the day to get everything else done and I feel like I've already accomplished something, you know what I mean?  Kinda nice-
So I've hung a smaller grouping of paintings at ArtAWhirl than usual, and I hung all dog painting this time.  In the past, I've only hung Minnesota Mammals and landscapes because my friend Sara Thornton is also a dog painter and she has a studio down the hall, but because I have so many dog-related art events coming up this summer, I kinda need to hang dogs!

May 17, "Pretty On Pink"

Not quite the movie, I know, but I couldn't resist!  This one is painted on a 6x6 cradled panel, right on the wood without gessoing it black first.  So a bit different from my usual fare!  I kinda love it!  It is always fun to swing things up a bit-  and this one required some darker color mixing...  really, it isn't hard to get to that darkest shade of grey, I swear!  You just have to practice it for a few years before catching on!
Come nab this painting this Friday at Art-A-Whirl!  Hope to see you there! I'll be at the Northrup King Building, #394!

This is a little painting I did last night, of the same doxie from Grand Marais!  I enjoy painting the same critter again and again, and seeing different elements from each one as I do it.  I'll have this little guy with me at Art-A-Whirl this weekend!  Come on over to the Northrup King Building, Studio #394, and see me!  Paintings of pups and otters, and maybe a few other things too~ I'll be there Friday night from 5 to 10!

May 14, Jack and Kelly

This one is a painting I've been wanting to paint for a long time.  I took this photo in July of 2014 in Grand Marais where our entire family went camping for my parents' 50th Anniversary~  and our friend Kelly and her husband and their dog Jack came down for a cake for my mom's birthday!  And this is Kelly's dog Jack sitting on her lap.  I loved the expression of entitled bliss on Jack's face, and the tilt and lean of his body into Kelly's embrace, and the expression of Kelly's hands holding him close.  So much said in just a few gestures... I love it!

May 13, "Dacshund Glances"

This little fella was waiting on a sunny sidewalk in Grand Marais for mom to come out of a store, and I was allowed to snap a couple photos.  This is the only one of his face because he couldn't be deterred from his vigil for anything!  I've painted a couple more of Fletcher because he is just so darn photogenic!
And I'm making this one an auction!  Because I feel like it!  And it is Friday the 13th and someone should get lucky!

My client, who ordered this kitty and his brother, wanted a younger, more wide-eyed look, so I repainted Mo from another photo and here he is!  Thought you might want a cat tossed in amongst all the dogs...
And I'll be at the Edina Art Center tonight for the "Art of the Garden" Opening!  Come see me! 5-8pm!  I've got a collection of garden pests for you to choose from! Hee!

May 10, "Otto In Green"

And this is yet another sweet pup from this past week-  we had seen a video about Hildegard of Bingen, (who has just been canonized in case you didn't know we have a new patron Saint for us artists!) and then E Erickson gave a presentation of her work (some of which has to do with Hildegard) and she uses a lot of gorgeous blues in her paintings and I had asked which blue was her favorite and had stated that I wanted to play with more blues, and then I went back into the studio and painted OTTO!
So thank you Anna, for sending me this great dog to paint!

May 9, "Late Saturday Night..."

Whew!  Yesterday was a long day of excellent critiques with intelligent, generous and kind people, and packing and driving and getting home and unpacking... so I somehow didn't have time to post, darn it!  But know I was thinking of it!  It was funny driving home-  you know how traffic can be really annoying with people cutting in and all, and somehow we get all competitive about it, and it feels icky, so I decided to start naming all the people in the cars, like "Oh there goes Bruce, on his way home to see the new baby!" to a little car zipping in and out, and "Dale's got the trailer on again" as an SUV passes with an ugly truck-bed trailer... it was fun coming up with names with mom, and nobody was irritating!  And we actually passed a red convertible with two older women- guess what we named them?!

This is the second to last painting from Saturday night!  If you can't tell, it is my Gus, who is going blind~  but still acts as if he isn't.  Ya gotta love that dog!  This one will be at Artistry this August! wahoo!
16x20 acrylic on black gessoed canvas- $720, if you want it you can buy it, but I need it back for the show!

May 7, "Josie's Maple"

I don't know if this lively creature is a male or a female... dogs don't have adams apples to tell us, do they?  I loved the unusual angle of this shot and the blue of the sky way back there... and the challenge of the anatomy of a dog's head from this perspective....
This is the smallest piece I've painted this weekend!  I am having SUCH a great time!  Hee!

May 6, "Into The Light (Gus)"

This is the first thing I painted yesterday!  I kinda like it!  I'm not quite sure if it is finished yet or not, but I'm liking it-  Gus was looking at Max at the dining room table, waiting for him to drop some food, and the light around his form was SO incredible!  I'm painting a couple more of this version...

May 5, "The Persistence of Love"

Currently, I am having a glass of wine and missing my boys, and having a fantastic time painting DOGS at the Art Colony for my upcoming show at Artistry in August!  Dang!  Don't know if I should post them or not... so here is one from my demo this weekend, of my sweet-earnest-ever loving-will-lick-any-body-part-near-me Gus...

I seriously love this one~

May 4, "Another SchaWHOOP!"

I just can't resist painting these, nearly abstract little ones of the otters-  SO fun to try to catch that movement, that flow-  love the tones too, trying to get those purple shadows and shifting greens....

I'm heading up to Grand Marais with me mum to participate in our annual Art Retreat at the Art Colony- that's not the name of the class, but it's about what it is~  I'm planning on painting large dogs-  if you have any good dog pics, send 'em my way!

And SIGN UP to paint with ME at the Art Colony in Grand Marais in June!  Class is coming up soon!!  Here's the info-

May 2, Another Otter for Art4Shelter!

Well, WE had a packed weekend here in Minneapolis!  Wow!  Took down two art shows (I am working on getting my "30 Cats & Friends" art to them, if you are someone who is wondering!) and went to see the Wild Kratts at the Orpheum on Saturday with Max and Duane!  We were in the 3rd row!!! AND got to see them after the show for photo opps!!!  Can you believe it?!?!  And you have no idea who I am talking about if you don't have a kid...
AND we participated in the Heart of the Beast's Mayday Parade yesterday!  Which was WONDERFUL and exhausting and fun!  Still a bit tired today but it was a great weekend! Yay!
Thanks for letting me tell you all about it!
