April 6, Finding A Frame!

SO I have a fun little story that got lost in all the fun and excitement of last week, and I thought I'd share it here with you! I have a painting that was accepted into the Rum River Art Center's Show (it is pictured below in the Gallery Show Opening at the bottom!) (okay, I actually had both paintings accepted, and they are both at the bottom) (oh and I made mom and Duane enter the show too, so THEY both have work in it as well!) and I needed to find a frame for it, and I figured I'd have one lying around somewhere because I assumed it was a standard size.

Is 14x18 a standard size?

Hmmm.  Not so much.  

I called around (it was Tuesday and the painting needed to be delivered Wednesday morning...) and couldn't find one, thought the Blick in Roseville said they had the sectional bits to put together to equal a 14x18, so I drove out there. But the sectionals were metal and the opening wouldn't work for my canvas, so I spent $100 anyway (on necessary things!  I know what you're thinking!) and then went next door to Turnstyle, which is a commission-based second-hand store that has home items too, thinking maybe I could find a frame, and sure enough!  There was this great crazy wood frame with an inside bit to hold the glass and print of Caribou (mislabeled "Moose Print") and I measured with the 8x10s I happened to have just bought (told you they were necessary things) and the inside opening was exactly 14x18!  Or at least I made sure when I got it up to the counter and borrowed a ruler before I bought it-

And I got it home and Duane and I took the inner bit out and it fits my painting PERFECTLY.

Gallery Show Opening Artist: Laura Irwin-Schack Artist: Jeanette Offerdahl Artist: Merry Conway Rumriver Art Center will present A New Day Dawning: A Celebration of Spring & Blooming gallery show opening taking place at the Rumriver Art Center Gallery (2665 4th Ave, Suite 103A) on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 1pm-4pm. The art gallery show will feature the artwork of local artists from the community who entered up to three pieces to Rumriver Art Center’s first Call for Entry. The theme of the gallery show as the title suggests is all things spring, nature and blooming. Rumriver Art Center received 109 entries from 59 different artists. A judge outside of the art center decided which pieces would be accepted into the show. There will be a total of 50 pieces on display in the gallery. The artwork that will be on display is in a variety of mediums, including: mixed-media, mosaic, photography, watercolor, acrylic, alcohol ink, fabric, colored pencil, polymer clay, wood, and much more. The Gallery Show Opening will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 1pm – 4pm. A 15-minute time slot reservation must be made in order to view the show opening in an effort to ensure the health and safety of all visitors. The gallery hours after the show opening are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am-4pm and Saturdays from 12pm-3pm. The Gallery Show ends Friday, May 7, 2021. April 5, Morning Light, March, Artists' Point

 And this is another one of the ones I painted up at the East Bay Hotel, with snow and rain and hugely crashing waves right outside our door! What's not to love!

The light was really terrible in the room I was painting in, but I'm so happy with this translation. I think this is my favorite of the group I did up there. 

It's a lot more abstract and brightly colored than I would usually go, and there's just so much I still really love about it.  It's up in our dining room right now, so I get to live with it for a while.  

And when you paint on black, it affects the color in so many ways. Depending on the light, your painting can look velvety, or it can be more subdued because of the dark, and it can also shine in higher contrast because of the dark.

April 4, March Sunrise at Artists' Point

 I couldn't sleep because I knew the sun would be coming up over the water and I don't get to see that often and that was why we'd come and I wanted to make sure I was up in time to see it so I kept waking and falling asleep again, like a kid waiting for Christmas. And finally I got up and wrote in my journal while waiting for the sun, and then I bundled up and went off, with just one dog, because three is a bit much and I knew I wanted to be taking photos and it was REALLY cold and windy and cloudy but the sun was kind and made an appearance with lots of clouds for drama! The color was amazing!  And I painted cats and lakes for the rest of our time in Grand Marais, and now I'm able to show you because the cats are done and hanging at Diamond's!

April 3, The Virtual Tour of "30 Cats in 30 Days"

Yay!

SO Duane and Max went along yesterday morning to take down the previous show (which was all Max paintings...) and here he is, looking really excited about it all!

 And they helped me hang the cats and Lucy my friend the owner was there too!  And it is always a delight to see her, so you should go to Diamond's if you're in town and see the cats and say HI to Lucy!  There is also a Brickmania right next door, if you have any lego freaks in your house...

I took this rather quick and ill-lighted video with a few other people sitting in the space, so I couldn't quite get what I was hoping for, but here you go!

April 2, Clouds Touch The Trees

 So, we hung the cats this morning at Diamond's and then I went off to Franconia Sculpture Park with some friends and kids for an outing, and now I'm posting what I've been wanting to paint since last week when we were up in Grand Marais!  Whew!  It's been just a crazy week of getting the cats done and a massively awesome birthday party and TAXES and finally I can show you what I was doing up there. Besides painting cats and going to the 1st and 2nd Street Thrift Store every chance I got...

This painting was painted on the floor near the back door that looked right out onto the lake, and Duane came in said door as I was nearly finished and Bunny the pug leapt at him in defense as she heard the door opening and got white paint all over me and the towel I was thankfully painting on and all over herself and a bit on the lower right of this painting but we were quick in getting her picked up and no paint got anywhere else except on my pants and the towel and she was compliant about being washed off in the kitchen sink, poor little pug baby~. I was able to fix the painting and Duane rinsed the paint out of my pants for me~

I had taken the photos the morning prior, when I couldn't sleep at all because of being in a strange place after not going anywhere for a year... I think I've only just really realized that. Strange bed, strange light, strange room. And knowing I was where I wanted to be, and that I wanted to paint the lake. 

Yup, I did know that!
